Why do we give gifts on Christmas?

Browse → Culture → Winter Holidays
Many people who celebrate Christmas exchange presents on this special holiday. But where does this tradition come from? And why do we do it?

Different countries and different families who celebrate Christmas often have their own reasons for giving (or sometimes not giving) gifts. For some people, the tradition comes from remembering Saint Nicholas’s good deeds and charitable gift-giving. For others, the custom has to do with the Wise Men (Magi) of the Christmas story, who traveled from very far to bring gift offerings to baby Jesus. It’s also possible that gift-giving is a tradition that was passed down from a very, very long time ago before Christmas even existed when the people who lived in what’s now Italy (Ancient Romans) gave gifts during winter.

For many families today, giving Christmas gifts is also about making a special time to show loved ones how much you care!

    Extra Special!

Many people spend lots of money and buy nice things to give as Christmas presents, but sometimes the most special gifts cost nothing at all!

What are some examples of awesome presents that don't cost anything but time and love? Making a nice card or drawing a picture are both really good examples. You can even make your own frame for your special drawing!

You can also make coupons for people that will let them redeem special or fun things later on, such as a hug, some help around the house, or a date for a game of soccer!
