Why do tigers have stripes?

Browse → Animals → Large Mammals

One of the things tigers are most famous for are their beautiful stripes! Tigers can have stripes in combinations of orange, black, white, brown, and tan.

Because tigers feed themselves by hunting, it’s important that they are able to blend in really well to their background! This is where the stripes come in. The stripy disguise helps tigers to camouflage into tall grasses.

A tiger’s stripes don’t just grow in its fur – if you were to give a tiger a haircut, it would still have stripes even if it was bald. (Although we don’t suggest playing barber with the largest cat in the jungle!) In addition to being striped all the way down, every tiger also has a unique pattern of stripes. Neat!
