Who invented sports?

Browse → Culture → Sports
The word “sports” refers to games or activities that have rules and are often competitive. While certain sports have more recent or clearly traceable histories, the concept of sports in general has been around for so long that it’s impossible to know who (if anyone!) first came up with it

Have you ever seen ancient cave drawings? Often, these pictures show humans hunting or participating in archery, which could point towards these activities as ancient sports. In cultures all around the world, there is evidence of sports such as wrestling, horse racing, gymnastics, and more dating back for hundreds or even thousands of years! – In fact, one of the most well-known examples of ancient sporting activity is the Olympics!

    Sport World!

While lots of sports are too old to know when they were first invented, there’s one sport you’re probably familiar with that has a pretty recent history! – Can you guess which sport it is? If you said “basketball,” then you guessed correctly!

Basketball was invented in 1891 by a Canadian man named James Naismith, who needed to invent an indoor sport that could be played inside a gym! - Neat!
