What kind of bird has the biggest wings?

Browse → Animals → Birds

In terms of height and weight, the biggest bird in the world is the ostrich, which is usually about 9 feet tall and about 300 pounds. (Whoa!) However, because ostriches don’t fly, they don’t come in first place when it comes to being the bird with the biggest wings.

The bird with the largest wingspan (size of wings from tip to tip) is the Wandering Albatross. The wingspan of most Wandering Albatrosses is about 10 feet, but some have been known to be as large as 12 feet. The tallest grown-ups you know are probably about 6-feet tall, so this bird’s wings are about twice as big across as a really big grown-up is tall!

    Winged Wonders!

If you could be any kind of bird, what kind of bird would you like to be?

Would you want to be a bird like the Wandering Albatross, with really huge wings?? Or would you rather be a songbird like a nightingale, known for your chirping and singing? Maybe you’d want to be the peregrine falcon, known for diving at up to 200 miles per hour and being the fastest animal in the world! Instead, maybe you feel more like a peacock with a big beautiful tail of feathers!

Don’t forget to think about where you would want to live if you were a bird! Some birds live closer to the ocean, while others are more likely to live in gardens or forests with trees.

Draw a picture of what you would look like if you were a bird, and the nest that you live in. Do you have a special bird name?
