What are beans?

Browse → Nature → Plants
You know that certain foods you eat are either fruits or vegetables, but you might be wondering exactly where beans come from and what they are?!

Most beans are technically seeds that we are able to use as food. Sometimes, foods that we refer to as beans (such as string beans) are actually the whole pods of a bean plant with its seeds still inside, which we refer to and eat just like the beans alone!

Beans are generally classified as neither a fruit nor a vegetable. Most beans are classified as a type of food called “legumes” (which refers to beans as well as peas, lentils, and peanuts) although some beans, especially when still in their pods (like snap peas) are thought of and used like vegetables. Beans are very healthy to eat, being full of both fiber and protein, as well as lots of flavor! – Yum!

    Bean plants!

By planting a few dry beans, you can see for yourself that beans are really just seeds!

Find a small pot and some fresh soil, and plant your beans carefully, making sure to leave some space between each seed. Water the pot and check on it every couple of days, making sure to leave it in a sunny spot. – Depending on the type of beans you have, you may need to soak them overnight prior to planting them.

After a little while, do you see a small green plant growing from one or two of your beans??
