Adult male elephants can reach weights of six to eight tons! That’s between 12,000 and 14,000 pounds! Most cars weigh about two tons, so you can imagine elephants are very heavy!
They can reach heights over 13 feet tall. To be that big and stay healthy, elephants need to eat hundreds of pounds of food and drink about 50 gallons of water every day! They can spend up to 16 hours every day just eating and finding food. Luckily for the other animals, elephants are vegetarians.
We’re not too likely to run into elephants in the United States. Except for zoos and circuses, elephants are most likely to be found in Africa and Asia. They aren’t usually dangerous to people, but because of their size, it’s a good idea to stay away from them.
You might hear people say that an elephant has four knees. Really though it just has two. They’re on its back legs like other four-legged mammals. The elephant’s front legs do bend like knees, but the parts that are bending are just the elephant’s wrists!
What’s interesting though is that even though they have knees, they can’t jump! As far as we know, they are the only mammals that can’t. They’re just too heavy!
