What is art?

Art can be a lot of things! Not everyone agrees about what art is either!  At a very basic level, art is a display of creativity.  It can be a painting or a play, a photograph or a song, a joke or a dance.  It can be almost anything!

Some art can be displayed in a museum. Some can only be seen during a live performance.  Art can happen anywhere. Whatever form it takes, art is meant to inspire thoughts or feelings in the people who experience it.   It can be beautiful or ugly.  It can be peaceful and it can also be scary!  Artists use their art in many ways.  Sometimes they are showing what they feel or how they see the world. Sometimes they are trying to teach us something or make us agree with them.  Art can be pretty powerful!

We’re All Artists!

We all have the ability to be creative.  How do you like to express your creativity?  Do you draw or color?  Do you dance? Do you sing? Do you tell jokes that make people laugh?

A lot of artists begin at very young ages. Mozart learned to play the piano when he was just four years old! Do you have a type of art that you really enjoy?

Find something you’re interested in and try making it into different types of art.  Maybe you pick a tree that’s in your yard.  You can try painting that tree, drawing it, and sculpting it out of clay.  You can write a song or a poem about it too.  Which of these do you like the best?  What other art can you make in that way?
